Persians can be affectionate family companions in homes that value calm routines and gentle handling. They often do well with respectful children, but noisy play and frequent carrying may be stressful for some individuals.

Persians are generally well suited to indoor and apartment living because they are usually calm and moderately active. They still need daily play, scratching areas, comfortable resting places, and enough room to move freely.

A Persian should usually be combed every day to prevent tangles from developing into mats. Grooming must reach through the full coat, especially around the chest, armpits, belly, and hindquarters.

Many Persians need regular gentle cleaning around the eyes and facial folds because tears and debris can accumulate. Persistent discharge, redness, discomfort, or changes in breathing should be assessed by a veterinarian.

Many adult Persians can tolerate ordinary periods alone when they have a safe, comfortable environment and a predictable routine. They still need daily companionship, grooming, play, and monitoring, so prolonged or frequent isolation is not ideal.

No cat breed is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic, and Persians produce allergens like other cats. Their long coat can also carry shed hair and dander through the home, so people with allergies should spend time with the breed before making a commitment.

A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss DNA testing for PKD1 and Persian progressive retinal atrophy, along with family health history. Buyers should also ask about breathing, eye, dental, and cardiac health because genetic testing does not evaluate every breed-associated problem.
