The Exotic Shorthair is a medium-sized, heavily boned cat with a compact body, broad chest, short sturdy legs, a thick tail, and a large rounded head. Its most distinctive feature is a dense, plush coat that stands away from the body while retaining the same general type, colors, and patterns associated with the Persian breed group.
The breed was developed in the United States during the mid-twentieth century, initially through crosses between Persians and American Shorthairs, with limited use of other shorthaired breeds in some early programs. Breeders then returned to Persian lines to establish a consistent short-coated cat with Persian structure and temperament.
Exotic Shorthairs are generally calm indoor companions with a playful, curious side. Their shorter coat reduces the grooming burden compared with a Persian, but the breed still requires regular brushing, facial care, and close attention to breathing and eye comfort.
Are Exotic Shorthairs good family cats?
Exotic Shorthairs are often calm, affectionate companions in homes that provide gentle handling and predictable routines. They commonly live well with respectful children and compatible pets, although introductions should remain gradual and supervised.
Is an Exotic Shorthair the same as a Persian?
The breeds share a very similar body and head type and belong to the same Persian breed group in several registries. The main practical difference is the Exotic Shorthair's dense short coat, although care needs and health considerations can still overlap.
How much grooming does an Exotic Shorthair need?
The plush coat usually benefits from brushing once or twice a week, with additional grooming during heavier shedding. Many individuals also need regular gentle cleaning around the eyes and facial folds.
Can an Exotic Shorthair live in an apartment?
Exotic Shorthairs generally adapt very well to apartment and indoor living. They still need daily play, scratching areas, comfortable resting places, and enough movement to maintain a healthy body condition.
Can Exotic Shorthairs be left alone during the day?
Many adults can manage ordinary working-day absences when they have a secure environment and a predictable routine. They remain social cats and should receive dependable companionship, play, and health observation before and after periods alone.
Are Exotic Shorthairs hypoallergenic?
No cat breed is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic, and Exotic Shorthairs produce common feline allergens. Their shorter coat may be easier to manage than a Persian coat, but it does not remove the possibility of an allergic reaction.
Do Exotic Shorthairs have breathing or eye problems?
Some individuals breathe and see comfortably, while cats with more extreme facial shortening may be more vulnerable to restricted airflow, tearing, eye irritation, or dental crowding. Comfortable breathing, open nostrils, healthy eyes, and functional facial structure are important considerations.
What health testing should an Exotic Shorthair breeder discuss?
A responsible breeder should provide documented PKD1 and PRA-pd results and discuss breathing, eye, dental, and family health. Blood-group information may also be relevant in breeding programs, while no single test can guarantee lifelong health.
