The Burmilla is a medium-sized, elegant but muscular cat with a rounded chest, slender yet strong legs, and a balanced wedge-shaped head. Large expressive eyes, a gently dipped profile, and dark outlining around the eyes, nose, and lips create the breed's characteristic made-up appearance.
Its best-known coat has a pale silver-white base with coloured tipping or shading that produces a sparkling effect. Depending on the registry, Burmillas may be shown in shorthaired and semi-longhaired varieties, while accepted colours and golden varieties also vary. The semi-longhaired coat is fine and silky rather than heavy or woolly.
The breed began in the United Kingdom after an accidental 1981 mating between a Chinchilla Persian male and a lilac European Burmese female. The four resulting black shaded silver female kittens became the foundation of a planned breeding programme. The name combines elements of Burmese and Chinchilla.
Are Burmillas good family cats?
Burmillas are generally affectionate, playful, and adaptable companions. Well-socialized individuals commonly live successfully with respectful children who understand gentle handling and allow the cat to rest undisturbed.
Do Burmillas get along with other pets?
Well-socialized Burmillas usually have a high potential to live successfully with compatible cats and cat-friendly dogs. Introductions should still be gradual because individual temperament and previous experience affect every relationship.
Can a Burmilla live in an apartment?
A Burmilla can adapt very well to apartment living when provided with daily interactive play, scratching surfaces, climbing areas, puzzle activities, and dependable companionship.
Can Burmillas be left alone during the day?
Many adult Burmillas can manage ordinary short absences, but frequent prolonged isolation is not ideal for this sociable breed. A predictable routine, enrichment, and regular interaction are important.
How much grooming does a Burmilla need?
Shorthaired Burmillas usually need light weekly grooming. Semi-longhaired individuals may need brushing several times a week, especially around the tail and underside, but their fine coat is generally not as demanding as a heavy Persian coat.
Are there American and European Burmilla breeds?
No. Burmilla is one breed rather than separate American and European breeds. Confusion usually comes from registry differences in how the shorthaired and semi-longhaired coat varieties are named or classified.
Are Burmilla Longhair and Burmilla Shorthair separate breeds?
They are coat varieties within the same Burmilla breed concept, but registries classify them differently. CFA accepts both under Burmilla, TICA publishes separate shorthaired and longhaired standards within one breed committee, FIFe recognises the shorthaired Burmilla, and GCCF calls its related semi-longhaired Asian variety the Tiffanie.
What health testing should a Burmilla breeder discuss?
A responsible breeder should discuss PKD1, Burmese hypokalaemia, and the Burmese head defect variant, together with family kidney health, mobility, longevity, known illnesses, veterinary records, and causes of death in related cats.
