The American Curl Shorthair is the short-coated form of the American Curl, a modern breed that began in Lakewood, California, in 1981. Its foundation cat was Shulamith, a black longhaired stray whose kittens demonstrated that the swept-back ear shape could be inherited. Shulamith later produced the first shorthaired Curl, and controlled breed development used selected domestic cats to maintain a broad foundation.
This is a small-to-medium, balanced cat with a moderately muscled rectangular body, medium boning, a softly contoured modified-wedge head, and large walnut-shaped eyes. The ears are wide and open at the base and curve backward in a smooth arc; adult ear tips should remain rounded and flexible rather than touching the head.
The Shorthair has a short, soft, silky coat that lies close to the body and remains resilient without feeling dense or plush. Undercoat is minimal, and the tail hair is approximately the same length as the body coat. All genetically possible colours and patterns occur.
Are American Curl Shorthairs good family cats?
American Curl Shorthairs are generally playful, affectionate, and interested in family activity. Well-socialized individuals often live successfully with respectful children, but interactions should be supervised and the ears must never be pulled or forced backward.

Many adapt well to compatible cats and calm, cat-friendly dogs after gradual introductions. Age, confidence, play style, and previous social experience remain important, so breed reputation should not replace careful observation.

Is the American Curl Shorthair a separate breed or a coat variety?
Classification depends on the registry. BondPals maintains a separate Atlas entry, TICA lists the shorthaired form as American Curl and the longhaired form separately, FIFe uses the distinct ACS and ACL codes, and CFA treats both coat lengths within the American Curl breed.
Do American Curl ears cause the same disease as Scottish Fold ears?
The American Curl's backward-curving ear trait is not established as the Scottish Fold TRPV4 trait that causes osteochondrodysplasia. However, the Scottish Fold-associated variant has been detected in some sampled American Curls, so unexplained stiffness, lameness, chronic pain, or possible Fold ancestry should be discussed with a veterinarian.
