The Somali is a medium-sized, lithe and firmly muscular cat with a slightly rounded wedge-shaped head, large alert ears, expressive almond-shaped eyes, and a full plume-like tail. Its balanced body combines strength and agility without appearing either heavily built or extremely slender.
Its fine, soft double coat is medium in length and becomes fuller around the neck, abdomen, hindquarters, and tail. Each hair carries several alternating bands of color, creating the warm, glowing ticked appearance shared with the Abyssinian. Accepted colors vary between registries and may include ruddy, cinnamon, blue, fawn, chocolate, lilac, and silver versions.
The Somali developed from longhaired kittens born in Abyssinian breeding populations. During the 1960s, breeders including Evelyn Mague began deliberately preserving and developing these cats. The name Somali was chosen because Somalia borders Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia; the modern breed did not originate in Somalia.

Somalis are often affectionate, playful, and highly involved family companions. They commonly live well with respectful children who understand gentle handling and enjoy energetic interactive play.
