The Oriental Longhair is a medium-sized, long and finely built cat with firm musculature, a tubular body, slender legs, a wedge-shaped head, very large ears, and almond-shaped eyes. Its semi-long coat is fine and silky, lies relatively close to the body, and becomes most dramatic on the plume-like tail. The coat lacks the heavy woolly undercoat found in many fuller-coated longhair breeds.
The breed shares its physical standard and close ancestry with the Oriental Shorthair, while the longer coat creates softer-looking outlines. It occurs in a very broad range of solid, tabby, tortoiseshell, smoke, shaded, silver, and white-marked combinations, although exact accepted colors and eye-color rules differ between registries.
The modern Oriental family was developed primarily in Britain from the 1950s onward using Siamese and selected domestic or pedigree cats to create Siamese-type cats in non-pointed colors. Breeders later established the longhaired form from compatible Oriental and Siamese-related lines carrying longhair. The breed has also been called Angora or Javanese in some places, but those names are not used consistently across modern registries.
