The Kurilian Bobtail is a medium-to-large, substantial cat with strong bone, a broad chest, a compact muscular body, and a slightly arched back. The hind legs are longer than the forelegs, giving the cat powerful jumping ability, while the broad head has rounded contours and a distinctive trapezoidal appearance.
Its defining feature is a naturally shortened tail made from curves, kinks, hooks, or spirals. Each tail is structurally unique and is covered with longer hair that creates the characteristic pom-pom appearance. The breed occurs in both shorthaired and semi-longhaired forms, which major registries may identify with separate codes while treating them as one closely linked breed group.
The breed developed naturally around the Kuril Islands and neighbouring areas including Sakhalin and the Kamchatka region. Short-tailed cats have been documented there for generations and were later brought to mainland Russia, where organised breeding and international recognition developed. The Kurilian Bobtail is considered distinct from the more slender Japanese Bobtail.
