The Khao Manee is a medium-sized, elegant but muscular cat with a balanced body, moderate bone, a broad wedge-shaped head, and alert, expressive ears. Its most distinctive feature is the short, smooth, glistening white coat, which should appear clean and close-lying rather than semi-long or fluffy.
The breed is famous for its striking eyes, which may be blue, gold, green, or odd-eyed, meaning each eye is a different color. Although the eye appearance is highly distinctive, it should not be confused with breed identity on its own, because other white breeds may also show odd eyes.
Khao Manee is an ancient natural breed from Thailand and is traditionally associated with royal households and good fortune. The name is commonly translated as white gem, reflecting both the brilliant white coat and the bright, jewel-like eyes.
Are Khao Manees good family cats?
Khao Manees are often affectionate, playful, and highly involved family companions. They commonly live well with respectful children who understand gentle handling and enjoy interactive play.
Do Khao Manees get along with other pets?
Well-socialized Khao Manees generally have good potential to live successfully with compatible cats and cat-friendly dogs. Introductions should still be gradual because individual temperament and previous experience affect every relationship.
Can a Khao Manee live in an apartment?
A Khao Manee can adapt well to apartment living when provided with climbing space, scratching areas, interactive play, puzzle activities, and dependable companionship. Mental stimulation is especially important for this alert breed.
Can Khao Manees be left alone during the day?
Most adults can manage ordinary short absences, but the breed is not well suited to frequent prolonged isolation. A predictable routine, enrichment, and a compatible human or animal companion can help meet its social needs.
How much grooming does a Khao Manee need?
The short white coat normally needs only light weekly grooming. Dental care, nail trimming, ear checks, and body-condition monitoring usually require more attention than coat maintenance.
Are all Khao Manees odd-eyed?
No. Khao Manees may have blue, gold, green, or odd-colored eyes. Odd eyes are well known in the breed, but they are not required in every individual.
What is the difference between a Khao Manee and a Turkish Angora?
The Khao Manee is a shorthaired white Thai breed with a smooth close-lying coat and a moderate muscular body. The Turkish Angora is a semi-longhaired Turkish breed with a finer, more elongated body, a plumed tail, and an accepted range of colors and patterns. Both breeds may have blue, gold, or odd-colored eyes.
What health information should a Khao Manee breeder provide?
A responsible breeder should discuss hearing status, BAER testing where relevant, family longevity, known illnesses, causes of death, veterinary records, and how genetic diversity is managed in the breeding programme.
