The Colorpoint Shorthair is a medium-sized, refined and muscular cat with a long tubular body, fine bone, slender legs, a tapering tail, and a long wedge-shaped head completed by very large ears. Its almond-shaped eyes must be vivid blue, while the short, fine coat lies close to the body with a smooth glossy finish.

The breed is structurally intended to be identical to the modern Siamese. Its distinguishing feature is its expanded point-color range. Under the CFA system, Colorpoint Shorthairs include red and cream points, lynx points, tortie or particolor points, and combinations based on seal, chocolate, blue, and lilac.

The breed was developed during the mid-twentieth century when breeders crossed Siamese cats with selected shorthaired cats carrying red and other desired color genes. Several generations of breeding back to Siamese type produced cats with the same elegant structure and social temperament but with point colors outside the four traditional CFA Siamese colors.

Sık sorulan sorular
Are Colorpoint Shorthairs good family cats?

Colorpoint Shorthairs are often affectionate, playful, and highly involved family companions. They commonly live well with respectful children who understand gentle handling and enjoy frequent interactive play.

Do Colorpoint Shorthairs get along with other pets?

Well-socialized Colorpoint Shorthairs generally have a high potential to live successfully with compatible cats and cat-friendly dogs. Many individuals actively benefit from having another social and playful companion.

Can a Colorpoint Shorthair live in an apartment?

A Colorpoint Shorthair can live successfully in an apartment when provided with climbing space, energetic daily play, scratching areas, puzzle activities, and frequent companionship. Prospective owners should also be comfortable living with a vocal cat.

Can Colorpoint Shorthairs be left alone during the day?

Most adults can manage ordinary short absences, but the breed is poorly suited to frequent prolonged isolation. A predictable routine, substantial enrichment, and a compatible human or animal companion can help meet its strong social needs.

How much grooming does a Colorpoint Shorthair need?

The short coat normally needs only light weekly grooming. Dental hygiene, nail trimming, ear checks, and body-condition monitoring generally require more attention than coat maintenance.

What is the difference between a Colorpoint Shorthair and a Siamese?

Under the CFA system, the two breeds share essentially the same body type, blue eyes, coat length, and temperament. The distinction is based mainly on point colors and patterns: CFA reserves four traditional point colors for the Siamese and places additional colors and patterns within the Colorpoint Shorthair.

Do all cat registries recognise the Colorpoint Shorthair as a separate breed?

No. CFA recognises it as a separate breed, while several other major registries classify comparable non-traditional point colors within the Siamese rather than maintaining a separate Colorpoint Shorthair breed.

Is a Colorpoint Shorthair the same as a colourpointed British Shorthair?

No. The Colorpoint Shorthair has the long, fine-boned and wedge-headed Siamese body type. A colourpointed British Shorthair has the round head, dense coat, heavy bone, and compact body expected of the British breed.

What health testing should a Colorpoint Shorthair breeder discuss?

A responsible breeder should provide documented PRA rdAc DNA results and discuss family eye, dental, heart, kidney, and general health. Buyers should also ask about longevity, known illnesses, veterinary screening practices, and causes of death in related cats.
