The Bombay is a medium-sized, muscular cat with a rounded head, broad muzzle, widely spaced eyes, and a solid body that often feels heavier than it appears. Its defining features are a short, close-lying jet-black coat, black nose leather and paw pads, and large eyes ranging from rich gold to copper.
The breed was developed in the United States by crossing sable Burmese cats with black American Shorthairs. The goal was to create a fully domestic companion with the sleek appearance of a small black panther while preserving a friendly and people-oriented temperament.
Bombays are not simply black domestic shorthairs. Pedigree examples are identified through their documented ancestry, balanced physical type, uniform black coloration, glossy coat, and the characteristics described in the standards of their recognising registries.
Are Bombay cats good family pets?
Bombays are often affectionate, playful, and highly involved family companions. They commonly live well with respectful children when handling remains gentle and the cat has access to quiet resting areas.
Do Bombay cats get along with other pets?
Well-socialized Bombays generally have a high potential to live successfully with compatible cats and cat-friendly dogs. Introductions should still be gradual because individual temperament and previous experience affect every relationship.
Can a Bombay live in an apartment?
Bombays generally adapt very well to apartment living when they receive daily interaction, play, climbing opportunities, and mental stimulation. Their need for companionship is usually more important than the size of the home.
