The American Bobtail Shorthair is the short-coated form of the American Bobtail, a naturally short-tailed breed developed in North America. Modern breed development began in the late 1960s after a bobtailed cat known as Yodi produced short-tailed offspring. Later breeders broadened the foundation with unrelated naturally bobtailed domestic cats from the United States and Canada rather than introducing wild feline ancestry.
This is a medium-to-large, powerful, athletic cat with substantial boning, a broad modified wedge-shaped head, prominent whisker pads, expressive eyes, and a muscular rectangular body. The natural bobtail is clearly shorter than a normal feline tail and may be straight, curved, slightly kinked, or hooked. Individual tails vary considerably and should remain flexible and functional.
The Shorthair has a medium-short, semi-dense double coat with a resilient texture, slight loft, a firmer topcoat, and a soft undercoat. Seasonal changes in density are normal, and all genetically possible colors and patterns are accepted under major recognizing standards. CFA treats Shorthair and Longhair as divisions of the American Bobtail, while TICA maintains American Bobtail Shorthair as a separate listed show record alongside American Bobtail.
American Bobtail Shorthairs are generally affectionate, intelligent, confident, and adaptable. Many bond with the entire household rather than selecting only one person and enjoy being involved in everyday activity without constantly demanding attention.
Most are moderately active. They commonly enjoy interactive hunting games, retrieving, puzzle feeders, climbing, and reward-based training, and some individuals readily learn harness walking or simple tricks. Regular play and mental enrichment help prevent boredom without requiring the extremely intensive exercise schedule of a high-energy breed.
Well-socialized American Bobtail Shorthairs often live successfully with respectful children, compatible cats, and cat-friendly dogs. They generally value regular companionship, so households involving frequent prolonged isolation may be less suitable than homes with predictable social contact.
The resilient short double coat is relatively easy to maintain. Brushing or combing once or twice a week usually removes loose hair and distributes natural oils, with more frequent grooming useful during seasonal shedding. Routine grooming also provides an opportunity to check the skin, body condition, and tail.
The bobtail should never be pulled, twisted, or deliberately straightened. Owners should become familiar with the individual cat's normal tail shape and movement so that new swelling, tenderness, wounds, stiffness, or changes in carriage can be recognised promptly.
Daily care should include interactive play, sturdy climbing and scratching furniture, dental hygiene, nail trimming, clean litter facilities, and measured portions of a complete life-stage-appropriate diet. Because American Bobtails are naturally substantial and muscular, body condition should be assessed by muscle and fat cover rather than by body weight alone.
Published breed-specific clinical health data for the American Bobtail remain limited. Research has identified frameshift variants in TBXT, historically called the T gene, in some short-tailed American Bobtails. In one study, 13 of 20 short-tailed American Bobtails carried one of two identified TBXT variants, while seven short-tailed cats carried neither, demonstrating that the breed's bobtail phenotype is genetically heterogeneous.
A later large genetic survey likewise found the known TBXT short-tail variant in some American Bobtails while documenting short-tailed individuals without any of the tested bobtail variants. This means that currently known DNA variants cannot explain every American Bobtail tail. The presence of a TBXT variant also does not by itself establish that an American Bobtail will develop the neurologic, spinal, bowel, or bladder disorders associated with severe tail-development abnormalities in some other populations; American Bobtail-specific prevalence data are insufficient for that conclusion.
Breeders should select for comfortable movement and functional tail structure and maintain family records covering spinal abnormalities, gait, tail function, urinary and fecal continence, reproductive history, neonatal losses, longevity, and causes of death. Prospective owners should seek veterinary assessment for hind-limb weakness, altered gait, tail pain, persistent constipation, urinary difficulty, or loss of bowel or bladder control, and should regard any available TBXT result as one part of a broader health evaluation rather than complete clearance. This information is for general educational purposes and is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a veterinarian.

Sık sorulan sorular
Are American Bobtail Shorthairs good family cats?
American Bobtail Shorthairs are generally affectionate, adaptable, and interested in family life. They often suit households that can provide regular companionship, interactive play, and predictable daily routines.
Are American Bobtail Shorthairs good with children?
Many well-socialized individuals live successfully with respectful children. Adults should supervise younger children, prevent pulling or twisting of the bobtail, and make sure the cat can leave an interaction whenever it chooses.
Do American Bobtail Shorthairs get along with other pets?
They generally have good potential to live with compatible cats and cat-friendly dogs after gradual introductions. Providing separate food, water, litter, resting, and hiding resources helps reduce competition while relationships develop.
Can an American Bobtail Shorthair live in an apartment?
Yes. Its moderate activity level and adaptable temperament can suit apartment living when daily play, sturdy climbing furniture, scratching surfaces, puzzle activities, and secure windows or balconies are provided.
Can American Bobtail Shorthairs be left alone during the day?
Many adults manage ordinary periods alone, but the breed generally values social contact. Frequent prolonged isolation is less suitable, and environmental enrichment cannot completely replace dependable interaction with people or compatible animals.
How much grooming does an American Bobtail Shorthair need?
Brushing or combing once or twice a week is sufficient for many cats. Grooming may need to increase during seasonal shedding, while routine skin, nail, dental, body-condition, and tail checks should continue throughout the year.
What is the difference between an American Bobtail Shorthair and an American Bobtail Longhair?
Both share the same breed history, muscular body type, natural bobtail, and general temperament tendencies. The Shorthair has a shorter resilient double coat with a plush feel, while the Longhair has a shaggy medium-long double coat with more pronounced furnishings.
What health screening should an American Bobtail breeder provide?
Ask for veterinary records and family information covering mobility, spinal abnormalities, tail function, urinary and fecal continence, reproductive history, longevity, and causes of death. Known TBXT variants can explain some bobtails, but no currently available DNA result accounts for every short tail or guarantees overall health.
